Inna lillahi Wa Inna ilayhi raji'un

Muslims offer condolences to someone whose loved ones have died, saying this verse “Inna lillahi Wa Inna ilayhi rajioon,” which mean“Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Allah we shall return.”

They always recite the Quran, number 156 mentioned in para 2 of Surah Al-Baqarah, “Inna lillahi Wa Inna ilayhi rajioon”. They do not miss reciting this verse whenever they listen to the news of death nearby. One, who experiences hard tragedy, plays it.

It is the Quranic verse recognized as commandant for believers. A Muslim is a brother to other Muslims, and all Muslims are brothers to one another. In the same patch, they share grievances in hard times. Therefore, every Muslim is asked to be patient while bearing the loss of loved ones. To encourage our loved ones, they are into tears. One must recall the words of the prophet (PBUH), which are, “He whose last words are-La ilaha illal-lah, enters Paradise.”

Although people often say Inna lillahi wa Inna ilayhi rajioon on the news of death only, they offer it in troublesome times. Sharing love and empathy remain the duty of Muslims in this hard time.

WHEN TO RECITE “INNA LILLAHI WA INNA ILAYHI RAJI’UN”

First of all, it is to be understood that saying “INNA LILLAHIWA INNA ILAYHI RAJI’UN” is not limited to reciting upon receiving the death news of a person. Nonetheless, it can be uttered in every situation when you are confronted with some distress or disaster.

Our eyes are in tears, heart with grief, but we say nothing with lips except for what pleases Allah, Inna lillahiwa Inna ilayhi rajioon” (Sahih Bukhari)

When Holy Prophet (PBUH.) Recited “IST IRJA”?

Do you know how many times did our Holy Prophet (PBUH) recite Inna lillahi Wa Inna ilayhi rajiuon? These were at four places. Let’s learn the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in the ways he preached;

  1. If a thorn pricks, then recite Inna lillahiwa Inna ilayhi raji’un.
  2. If a mosquito stings, recite the name of Allah and keep patience.
  3. If your light extinguishes, recite lillahiwa Inna ilayhi raji’un.
  4. If your shoe-lace snaps or tears, prefer reciting ISTIRJA.

Hence, one may recite Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon in any language when facing discomfort and aloofness from peace. Therefore, it is necessary to understand that saying Inna lillahi is not just a statement but a prayer itself. If someone recites Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilayhi Rajioon with pure heart and intention that we all eventually return to Him, we must be rewarded.
